Death Of Noted Linguist
A man whose colourful career included a remarkable transition from governor of Eastern Siberia in the days of the royal Russia to a postal division clerk in the General Post Office, Wellington, died in Wellington on Saturday at the age of 76. He was Major-General S. Merlin, one of the general military staff of the Czar of all the Russians, and a Wellington resident for many years. MajorGeneral Merlin spoke 15 languages, including Japanese, which he learnt while he was military attache to the Russian Embassy at Tokio for five and a half years early this century.— (P.A.)
