! (P.A.) AUCKLAND, February 27.’ I Auckland won the Yaldhurst Shield I for the province scoring most victories j in the New Zealand senior swimming i championships when the events were I brought to a conclusion last night. Canterbury and Otago each scored three, Taranaki two, and South Canterbury and Waikato one each. Miss Casey won the 50 yards invitation scratch race to make a clean sweep of all the women’s free- ! style events, but in this she had only a narrow margin victory over Miss J. Hastings (Auckland). P. E. Mathieson (Auckland), who made his first appearance in championship company as a junior in 1928, at the age of 13, confirmed his standing as the best backstroke swimmer in New Zealand by easily winning the 100 yards title in 67sec. The most exciting event of the night and perhaps of the entire carnival was the inter-island womeh’s relay, which the South lost j after establishing a big lead with the ' two backstroke exponents, Misses N. I Lane and J. Stewart. When Miss ' Casey dived for the final leg she was nearly 30 yards behind Miss H. By winning all five senior freestyle titles Marshall equalled the performance of Sir Frank Beaurepaire. ... One of the greatest surprises in the championship carnival was the defeat, in the 200 metres breaststroke championship, of Kevin Hallet by the New Zealander,. John Shanahan. Hallett, who represented Australia in the Olympic Games, used butterfly stroke, and ■ Shanahan, who .was swimming for Victoria, employed the orthodox style. He won by ssec in 2min 53sec. Shanahan, who has broken several Victorian records since coming to Australia a year ago, will return to New Zealand in May. Another title changed hands when a 14-year-old Victorian schoolgirl, Marjory McQuade, beat the titleholder, Denise Spencer, over 200 ■ metres, with Judy Joy Davies third.

Earlier in. the week Miss McQuade also beat Miss Spencer to win the 100 metres championship. Her time in the 200 metres, was 2min 35sec, which clipped 3.Bsec bff the Queensland record; but "was 2.Bsec outside the Australian record.
