ATHLETICS Steel Wins Third Canterbury 880 Title In Fast Time

The Greyrnouth runner, B. Steel, won his third Canterbury half-mile title at the senior athletic championships held at Lancaster Park, Christchurch, on Saturday. He won by 20 yards. In returning lmin 57 l-10sec for the 880 yards, Steel won his race in the manner of a champion, and had there been a runner capable of extending him over the last hundred yards the time might have been a good bit better. He ran in second or third place for a quarter-mile and at the bell- went to the front and ran away from the field. .None of the other three. Greymouth runners at the championships had any success. Canterbury records were broken in the hammer throw by J. R. Brown (Technical Club), who did 147 ft Ilin, mile walk by R. C. Brown (Sydenham), 6min 41.4 sec, and 440. yards by J. W. Sutherland (Technical), 49 7sec. The Canterbury standard was equalled in the 880 yards (B. Steel, lmin 57 l-ssec), 120 yards hurdles (K. Loader, 16 4-ssec), and hop, step and jump (P. C. Walker, 44ft sin). . The star performer in the sprints was D. R. Batten, who retained his titles in the 100 yards and 220 yards, and the ease with which he won each race showed him to be in a class bv himself in the shorter distances, and he ran a really good quarter in the relay race, the watch showing 51.2 sec for his lap. Batten did 10,2 and 22.8. The principal results are as follows:— ■ , „ „ 100 Yards. —D. R. Batten 1, E. G. Ayson 2, J. W. Sutherland 3. Time. 16 2sec. 220 Yards.—D. R. Batten 1. .D. Dephoff 2, E. G. :COAST JUNIOR HIGH JUMP RECORD BROKEN In the absence of leading senior athletes at the Canterbury championships at Christchurch, the Greymouth Amateur Athletic Club on Saturday held a scratch meeting at Victoria Park. A strong south-westerly wind affected the performances of the i sprinters and times were slow. The Greyrnouth junior high jumper, A. Blackie, who has been selected to represent Canterbury in the New Zealand championships at New Plymouth on Saturday and against the touring Australians "at Christchurch on Wednesday evening, bettered his own West Coast record on ’ Saturday. He cleared sft 7-Jin, which j was an improvement of a quarter of an inch on his record and also on j his winning jump in the Canterbury championships. He did not attempt a , higher jump, though he has jumped higher in mixed competition. Results: —

AUSTRALIANS SET RECORDS AT NAPIER MEETING (P A ) NA'PIER, February 27. New Zealand records for the 220 yards hurdles and 220 yards flat were broken by visiting Australian athletes ar Napier yesterday afternoon. M. Curotta won the 220 yards flat by seven yards in 21.3 sec. The time was one-tenth of a second faster than John Treloar’s record, set at McLean-Park two years ago. Curotta easily won the 100 yards in 9.6 sec, equalling the New Zealand record, but the wind was too strong to allow official recognition 01 the time. , . . G. Goodacre had just too much in reserve for J. M. Holland in the 220 yaids hurdles, and won by a yard and a halt in 24 4sec —one-fifth of a second faster than the record set by A. R. P. Eustace last season. Goodacre also beat Holland, who is the national record holder, in the 440 yards hurdles. Holland weakened in the last few yards, and Goodacre won by two yards in 54.6sec—fourfifths of a second outside the record. J D. Sinclair, the national mile champion, fully extended D. White (Australia) in the 880 yards, and the Australian won by inches in lmin 56 ssec G. Avery (Australia) won the hop, step, and jump with a distance of 46ft sJin, but was fully extended by R. Meban (Gisborne) in the long jump, and won by only a quarter of an meh with a leap of 20ft 7in. The Australians won each of the seven events in which they competed. They leave tomorrow for Christchurch. Brian Derwin (Napier)- created a new Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay junior two mile record. In a special attempt he covered the distance in 9min 48.7 sec, 23 3-ssec faster than the previous time and 6.3 sec outside the national junior record.. Marjorie Jackson, of Lithgow, New South Wales, equalled the Australian record and broke the Victorian women’s 100 yards record when she ran the dis- ’ tance in llsec.
