CROQUET Play In Singles Nears Final At Coast Tournament
Fine weather prevailed when play in the West Coast Croquet Association’s annual tournament was resumed at the Makura club’s greens this morning. Good progress was made on Saturday in the championship singles event and the final of the first life was expected to be played this afternoon between Mr Petty (Nelson) and Mrs Martin (Christchurch) . In the handicap singles event the following were the seption winners: —Section C, Mrs Hosking (Christchurch); section D, Mrs Slee (Westport) ; section E, Mrs Nottle (Westport). The remaining two sections will be played this afternoon and tomorrow morning. , Some good play was seen in this morning’s matches in the championship singles, and one of the best games of the tournament so far was the one in which the Runanga player, Mrs Howard, defeated a Christchurch competitor, Mrs Nicholls, 26-25. Both competitors played consistent croquet. Mrs Martin (Christchurch), who has been one of the most consistent players at the tourney, furthered her chances of success when she defeated Mrs Hosking (Christchurch) in the championship singles this morning, 26-10. The Runanga player, Mrs Wilson was beaten rather comfortably by Mrs .McCracken (Christchurch) 26-8. Results of matches played on Saturday and this morning are: — Championship Singles. —First Life: Mr Petty (Nelson) defeated Mrs Hosking (Christchurch) 26-18; Mrs Martin (Christchurch) defeated Mrs Dickie (Christchurch) 26-17; Mrs Martin (Christchurch) defeated Mrs Nicholls (Christchurch) 26-16. Second Life—Third round: Mrs Howard (Runanga) defeated Mrs Nicholls (Christchurch) 26-25; Mrs Martin (Christchurch) defeated Mrs Hosking (Christchurch) .26-10; Mrs McCracken (Christchurch) defeated Mrs Wilson (Runanga) 26-8. Championship - .Doubles. — First round: Mesdames Prescott and Keating (Greymouth) defeated Mrs Shannon and Miss McKnight (Greymouth) 26-18; Mpsdames Rhodes and Nicholls (Christchurch) defeated Mesdames Warnes and Mercer (Greymouth) 26-16. Second round—Mesdames McCracken and Gandle (Christchurch) defeated Mesdames Martin and Bull (Christchurch) 26-19. Handicap Doubles. —Second round: Mrs Hooper and Miss McKnight (Greymouth) defeated Mesdames McCracken and Ray (Christchurch) 26-18,
