LABOUR OFFICE REPORTS RISE IN UNEMPLOYMENT
GENEVA, February 26.
The International Labour Office has reported a significant year-end rise in unemployment -in six European countries. 2,161,271 registered unemployed—an increase of nearly 400,000 over December, 1947. Other countries in which an increase in unemployment was most noticeable were Belgium, Denmark, Finland. France, and Switzerland. Unemployment in the United States remained below 4 per cent, during the last nine months of 1948 but increased to 4.4 per cent. Or "2,664,000 in January, 1949, compared with 2,965,000 in January, • 1948. In Britain, 359,000 were registered at the employment exchange as wholly ..or partially unemployed in December, 1948, compared with 307,200 the year before.
