The expanding population . would force Australia to import food, unless primary production was increased, said the Minister of Commerce, Mr Pollard, who estimated that the population of Australia would reach 10,000,000 within 20 years. lie added that without adequate rural expansion, imports of meat, potatoes, and fruit might be necessary. The ’’ key to the future food requirements was the breaking up of large pastoral holdings, coupled with improved farming methods.
