U.S. READY WITH MEASURES TO PROVIDE WORK

As anticipated the slackening of employment was the reason given today for a Bill, approved by the Senate Public Works Committee, for authorising the expenditure of 40,000,000 dollars on planning for future Federal buildings and 30,000,000 dollars to repair post offices and other buildings. Senator Davis,Chavez, author y of the new measure, said the purpose of the planning would be to have a building schedule ready for the “expected period of slackening employment and construction.” He said the idea was’that the actual work would be undertaken “when conditions warrant.”

At the: same,time, Government experts said for the first time today that the current unemployment rise w as not of the dangerpus type that leads to a depression. They pointed to the recall of workers at several plants as straws indicating that the jobless trend may soon be halted and reversed. Officials of the United States Employment Service said that jobless payments declined for the week ended February 19.
