Women’s Institutes

Stillwater W-. 1. Mrs Cooke presided over a good attendance of members at the October meeting of the Stillwater Women’s Institute. Mesdames Banks and Cooke were appointed delegates to attend the half-yearly meeting at Reefton. _ An application has been made for a “link” institute overseas, and two tins of fat were donated for food parcels. The motto for the month was “Nothing is troublesome that we do willingly.” Mrs Cooke gave demonstrations on the making of a work box, and a cushion cover from the ends of used ties. The roll-call was “A penny for friendship.” The article for the November “bring and buy” was an apron. The “wandering shilling” was won by Mrs Morris. A bird game conducted bv Mrs Wilson, was won by Mrs Peters. Monthly competitions resulted as follows:—Laundered shirt, Mrs Galligan 1, Mrs Banks 2; bowl of flowers, Mrs Galligan 1, Mesdames Smith and W.. and F. Adams equal 2. The hostesses for the evening were Mesdames W. and F. Adams.

Greymouth W.l. The Greymouth Women’s Institute held its October meeting recently in the Lyceum Hall. Mrs Green presided over a good attendance. Two new members were welcomed. -A book was received irom the institute’s “link” in Dorset dealing with the history of that county. Mrs Barker, the Federation president, gave a talk on the aims and objects of the W.l. organisation. An interesting demonstration on the making of a plastic necklace was given by Mrs F. Taylor, who also conducted a spelling bee. The roll-call, “What to plant this month,” was well responded to. Competition results were:—Best bloom, Mrs Johnson 1, Mrs Perrin 2; sausage rolls, Mrs Green 1, Mrs McKnight 2; handkerchief, Mrs Smart 1. Mrs Green 2. Kotuku W.l.

The monthly meeting of the Kotuku Women’s Institute was held in the schoolroom, Mrs Brereton presiding. Mesdames I. and W. Dalzell were appointed delegates to attend the -halfyearly meeting at Reefton. It was decided to hold a “bring and buy” at the next meeting. The roll-call, “A funny picture.” wits well received. The winner of the “prettiest plate” competition was Mrs N. Gillman, with Mrs R. Colman second. Other competitions resulted:—Flowers, Mesdames Priest and P. Brereton equal 1, Mrs W. Dalzell 2. The “wandering shilling” was won bv Mrs Priest. Mesdames Bell and N. Gillman conducted the social half-hour, games being won by Mesdames, W. Bereton, W. Dalzell and P. Brereton. Hostesses for the evening were Mesdames O’Neill and Nestor. Karoro W.l.

Mrs Dodd presided over a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Karoro Women’s Institute.. Advice was received from the “link” in England of receipt of the parcels of fat forwarded. > A demonstration of making dolls was given by the president.

Competitions resulted as follows: — Bloom, Mrs Thompson 1, Mrs Fleming 2, Mrs Robertson 3; covered coat hanger, Mrs Reynolds 1, Mrs Murray 2 Mrs Shepherd 3; cheese straws, Mrs Murray 1, Mrs Dodd 2, Mrs Trowbridge 3. t Mrs Batty and Mrs Thompson had attended the half yearly conference at Reefton, it was reported .

Runanga W.l. The Runanga Women’s Institue held its monthly meeting in the Fire Brigade Hall,. Mrs Gillaly presiding over a good attendance. Guests of the evening were Mesdames Horn, Longstaff and Coll. Mrs Horn gave a brief account of her experiences while travelling in Europe. Mr Chibnail gave a lecture- on the art of flower blending and show arrangements. Mrs Graham and Mrs Williams were delegates to the Reefton conference. An invitation to the Taylorville Women’s Institute’s birthday party on October 23 was accepted. Hostesses for the evening were Mesdames Graham, Wright, Thompson. Lucky gift was won by Mrs Leech.

Runanga Plunket Society At a meeting of the Runanga Plunket Committee arrangements were made for the annual house-to-house collection. At the nurse’s request it was decided to raise funds to finance testing scales which will be lent to mothers who require them.
