OVER TWO INCHES OF RAIN RECORDED
For the second time this week, Greymouth yesterday experienced a day of unusually heavy rain. After Wednesday’s heavy showers, which totalled more than an inch in just over eight hours, particularly heavy falls were again recorded yesterday, 2.06 inches falling in the 24 hours. Of this fall, 1.44 inches fell between noon and 7 o’clock last evening. The heavy rain has been general, over two inches falling at Hokitika on Wednesday. As a result, rivers are swollen and a six-knot current in the Grey river this morning, combined with big seas on the bar, have closed the port to shipping. A number of shipping movements scheduled fox- late this afternoon will probably be postponed until tomorrow. Sodden grounds have also been responsible for the cancellation of some sports fixtures.
