Wonder Boy— Iwo Jima At Ellerslie Races

Handily placed with only 7.8 Wonder Boy will be one of the favourites for the Spring Handicap, the main event on the second day of the Auckland Racing Club's meeting at Ellerslie tomorrow. He won very attractively last week over a mile, finishing strongly, after some good performances at Riccarton in August. The 'Rhodes Scholar gelding is likely to encounter strong opposition from last week’s surprise winner, Frontier Mac. The Chatsworth gelding won very easily last week and his rise in weight in a less classy field may not be sufficient to stop him. He is bred in the purple and while he has not won out of turn to date he looks likely to live up to his fashionable blood lines.

The topweight tomorrow will be the consistent Cowper, who, however, was never a likely proposition in last week’s race. The shorter distance tomorrow may be all to the liking of the son of Mr Standfast, and it will be recalled that at his second last start, at Te Aroha, on October 2 he won the Ralph Somers Memorial Cup, over a mile and three furlongs very impressively from Valley Boy and Chung Chong. Cowper, on that form, will be in the firing line tomorrow.

Chung Chong followed up his third at Te Aroha with a useful if somewhat disappointing performance last week at Ellerslie. He was fourth to the straight last Saturday in the main event, the Mitchelson Cup but faded out in the run home. He may do better tomorrow.

Further down the list the chance.s of such horses as Prince Chat and Oklahoma make some appeal, while Ascot Lad will not be entirely discarded for his failure last week. In the second division, which appears to be lacking in the class of, the first, Silver Lighting, Peter Nelson and Huntore have the best credentials. Silver Lighting was fourth in the Mitchelson Cup last week and Peter Nelson won attractively over a mile at Te Aroha.

Trench Meter Reinstated

A special appeal to the Racing Conference was made yesterday by Mrs E. J Wrigley, Wellington, owner of the horse Trench Meter, asking for the removal of disabilities imposed on October 5 by the Auckland District Committee, which disqualified the horse for five years. After hearing counsel for the appellant the appeal judges, Messrs H. R. Chalmers, J. F. B. Stevenson? and T. B. Heath, ordered the removal of the disqualification of the horse from the date it was imposed Trench Meter was bought for the present owner at auction at a sale at Trentham in January—(P.A.)
