TROPHY PROMISED FOR ‘SEDDON SHIELD’ COMPETITION

A promised donation of a valuable trophy by a Greymouth business firm, to be’competed for along lines similar to the Seddon Shield contest, between the West Coast. Buller, Nelson and Marlborough Associations, was reported to a meeting of the executive committee of the West Coast Cricket Association last evening. The matter was introduced by Mi- L. P. Coffey, when a letter from the Marlborough Association regarding a revision of the rules governing the Hawke Cup was read. The letter also suggested that a mid-week conference between the four associations named above be held at Nelson at an early date.

Mr Coffey said that, provided a competition could be arranged along similar lines to the Seddon Shield, Westland Breweries had promised to give a valuable trophy.

“Would Give Stimulus”

Mr Coffey, said that the competition would have to be well arranged and he thought it would give a stimulus to the game on the West Coast. He added that he would be willing to attend a midweek conference at Nelson when the matter could be discussed and the views of the other associations on the matter could be obtained. Members stated that as the Hawke Cup was not being played for by direct challenge, it was likely that a challenge from the West Coast or any of tnb other minor associations would not be considered favourably by the holders of the cup. It was also pointed out that several challenges for the Hawke Cup had to be declined last season because of the number that had been received. The secretary, Mr Dewar, was instructed to communicate with the associations concerned, outlining the proposal and asking that a mid-week conference be held in Nelson to discuss the matter.

In reply to a circular from the New Zealand Cricket Council, stating that challenges, for the Hawke Cup were required to be lodged before November 1, it was decided not to enter a challenge.

Manawatu Club’s Visit

Information from the Manawatu Wanderers Cricket Club regarding its proposed match against the West Coast at Greymouth on January 3 and 4 was received, stating that the team would require accommodation for a party of 15 from Saturday until Tuesday Mr Coffey said that the accommodation position would have to be watched very carefully during that period as there were several race meetings in the district at the same time and hotel accommodation would be at a premium. The secretary was instructed to confirm the dates of the visit of the Manawatu Club and the arrangement of accommodation was left in the hands of the secretary and Mr Coffey.
