Semi-finals For Women’s Golf Title Played Today

(PA.) . ... . ... ; Z.

.. PALMERSTON. N.,. This Day. . Making, a determ’ined bid ..to., def eat the title-holder, Miss E. Wilkinson, Mrs R. Fullerton-Smith .found that six on the 19th hole (bogey four) was just not good enough to upset the present champion in. the quarter-final match for the New Zealand women’s singles golf championship. Mrs Fullerton-Smith, . who herself won the title in 1931 arid 1934, was two down at the turn, but she had a hoineward round of 39 and was square at the 18th. The match was played in brilliant sunshine on a course in splendid condition for low scoring. At the 18th hole both players had

splendid drives, but with their seconds both were well short of the green. Mrs Fullerton-Smith topped her third and the ball ran well past the hole. She took two putts to get down, but Miss Wilkinson was in for four and the match was squared. When Miss Wilkinson put her second beyond the green at the 19th, Mrs Fullerton-Smith had a grand opportunity to clinch the match, but she, too, failed to find the green. Miss Wilkinson was down for five, but Mrs Fullerton-Smith required three putts, missing a four-footer when the

pressure was on. i Playing brilliantly on the outward I journey, Mrs J. Ball (Wanganui) 'gained too great a lead on Mrs H. Murray (Miramar) and, although the latter gave a sound display on the homeward journey, she was unable to make up the leeway. Except for two putting lapses, when she took three putts on the 10th and 13th, .the winner was in good form. 1 Mrs G. W. Hollis (Titirangi) and Mrs C. N. Jacobsen (Auckland) had a battle royal, the match ending on the 22nd green. The match was

noteworthy for the number of holes ■ halved on the outward journey, there being no fewer than six. I Miss H. Buchanan (Christchurch) played too consistently for Mrs P. Andrew (Titirangi), beating her 4 and 3. The first four holes were halved and at the fifth the South Islander went into the lead with five to seven. The sixth and seventh . were halved in sixes, and at the Eighth Miss Buchanan went further ahead with three to her opponent’s four. The ninth was halved in three. Miss Buchanan was out in 40 to Mrs Andrew’s 43. Mrs Andrew took one iback at th,e 10th, but last the 11th ' and 12th to make Miss Buchanan three up. The long 13th was halved in fives and, winning the 14th in a four to a five, Miss Buchanan made the match dormie. The 15th was halved in fives. Quarter-finals, New Zealand championship.—Mrs G. W. Hollis (Titirangi) i beat Mrs E. M. Jacobsen (Auckland) at the twenty-second; Miss H. Buchanan (Christchurch) beat Mrs P. Andrew (Titirangi), 4 and 3; Miss E. Wilkinson (Grange) beat Mrs R. S. FullertonSmith (Marton), at the nineteenth; Mrs J. Ball (Wanganui) beat Mrs H. Murray (Miramar), 3 and 2. New Zealand Plate:—Third round: Mrs N. J. Ellison (Hutt) beat Miss I. Jepson (Wanganui), 3 and 1; Miss C. Smith (Invercargill) beat Mrs L. I. Day Hamilton), at the nineteenth; Mrs T., L. King (Shandon) beat Mrs F. Jubb (Titirangi), 3 and 2; Mrs A. Crombie (Wellington) beat Mrs F. Preston (Titirangi), 5 and 3.
