INDIAN PLEA FOR ENDING OF ATOMIC ENERGY DEADLOCK

(Rec 2.30 p.m.) PARIS, October 11

Sir Bengal Narsinga Rau, Indian chairman of the United Nations eleven-nation sub-committee on atomic energy control pleaded with the United States, Britain and Russia to break the deadlock over the control of atomic energy, saying “think of the psychological effect on a world harassed by anxiety if we could say that the deadlock had been broken.”

He called upon the commission to resume its work, to study all matters within its term of reference and to prepare for submission to the Security Council a draft treaty or convention incorporating the commission's ultimate proposals. The Russian delegate, Mr Malik, promised to study the Indian proposal. The British representative, Mr Miles, said he was very doubtful whether a new basis for discussion had been established.
