Attempted Kidnapping Alleged: Second Arrest
(P.A.) " WELLINGTON, This Day. Another man was charged in the Magistrate’s Court today with what the police alleged was an attempted kidnapping in Wellington on October 5. The accused is Amo Alexander Birch, aged 29, a motor engineer. Senior-Detective Callaghan, whose application for a remand was granted by the Magistrate, Mr A. A. McLachlan, said the accused would appear jointly on Thursday with a man who had been similarly charged last week. The charge against Birch was that on October 5, at Wellington, he attempted to take away a child, Deborah Janet Todd, aged nine, with intent to deprive her parent, Bryan James Todd, of possession of the child. Replying to the application for bail by the accused’s counsel, Senior-Detective Callaghan said the accused was arrested by Detective Harper this morning. The charge, which was regarded as one of attempted kidnapping, was very serious. The accused had already been bailed when he appeared in the court last week on a charge of being unlawfully in possession of a firearm.
Bail was granted at £lOO with a surety for the same amount.
