SPORTING Kartikeya Made Poor Showing At Washdyke: Explanation Accepted

[SPECIAL TO . STAR]

CHRISTCHURCH, October 9.

One of the features of the South Canterbury fixture today was the poor showing made by Kartikeya in the principal event, the Teschemaker Handicap. He was supported down to a short price, and carried nearly three times as many tickets as the second choice, Coral Arc. He was always well back, and when expected to make a forwar move on the outside after reaching the run home, he was taken towards the inner rail, did not improve, and finished in sixth place. - An inquiry into the favourite’s showing was immediately called hy the stipendiary steward, Mr C. F. Hartland. After hearing evidence, the judicial committee decided that the explanation of Ivaitikeya’s rider, C. T. Wilson, that the performance of hm mount was due to accidental interference by Royal Sal, ridden by N. Eastwooc, at least on three occasions, be accepted. When this verdict was announced through the loud-speakers, there was a pronounced cline v e from the crowd.

Kartikeya disputed last place for practically the whole journey of the Teschemaker Handicap. Avonbridge led from the early stages and had a break of five lengths through the back stretch from Clyde Bridge, Hansel and Coral Arc. The last-named gradually drew up to the leader rounding the home turn and was in front when the run home was commenced. He soon opened up a gap

from Clyde Bridge and beat him decisively, while the latter as easily beat Hansel. Avonbridge was two lengths back, in front of Romantic, with Kartikeya, Renege and Royal Sal next. Citril was sent out at a short price in the Flying Handicap and duly won, but only by a narrow margin. Top Deck : was the early leader and still had charge entering the straight from Connaught, Citril, All’s Fair and Erinborough. Citril reached the front a furlong _ from the post and appeared to be in for a comfortable win, but eased up nearing the line . and Connaught got to within a neck of her. Top Deck held on for third money a length in front of Erinborough, with All’s Fair and Julius Caeser next.

Never in Doubt

Flying Sovereign justified her short-priced favouritism for _ the Taiko Hack Handicap by a decisive win. She followed Golden Girl, Hay Fort, Lilli Marlene and Milly Mandy to the straight entrance, but soon drew to the front and outclassed her opponents over the last furlong. Bay Fort held on for second money from Lilli Marlene, who beat Primitive and Golden Girl by a length. Te Tara fell passing the half-mile. Profane, first win choice for the Kerrytown Hack Handicap, failed to race'up to his Ashburton form. He was badly placed in the early stages, and although fourth into the straight, ' did not carry on very far in the run home. Sorry, Beaugency and Night Owl were together entering the straight with Profane and The Grate handy. Sorry and Night Owl were fighting out the finish when The Grate passed them to go on for a decisive win from Night Owl, while Sorry lasted to beat Blue Hussar ’"w half a head for third, with Beaugency almost in line next. Profane and Aidair followed. The well-fancied Marut met trouble early and was never near the leaders, and Aberdare, Lorenzo and Golden Mirage were slow away. Detain Makes Good The Otaio Hack Hurdles attracted a large field and as at previous spring meetings included several inexperienced candidates. In spite of his previous disappointments Detain was made first win choice, and in contrast to his recent displays he jumped well throughout. He was handy to the leaders all the way and moved up to be in second place to the pacemaker, Robert, turning for home, There was not much between this pair over the last fence, but once headed for the post Detain went away to have an effortless victory from Robert. Big Top struggled under his big weight to gain thind money, a length in front of Knight Crusader, with Desert Victory at the head of the strung-out remainder. Blanket again refused to leave the barrier. Wild Aske fell at the first fence and Reorapa bumped his rider off at the second fence when in _ a clear lead. Relampago fell at the six furlong post. The large field paraded for the Spring Stakes spread out early and Sally Gold soon acted as pacemaker from Blair Marshall, Morning Watch, Pedas, Crease, Beau Soir and Comeaway, and there was little change entering the straight. The run home had not long been in progress before Crease drew to the front and carried on for a convicing win. In a tight struggle for the minor placings Blair Marshall held on to beat Morning Watch, with a head to Sally Gold. Beau Soir, Pedas. Langham, Saieda, Royal Sal and Courier followed.

Trotting Events Sure Nut and Curiosity disputed favouritism in the Winchester Trot but neither was ever prominent. Glamis Castle acted as the early pacemaker and held his place to the half-mile, while Bonny Gold supplanted him to lead into the straight from Gloxania, Cavaliar, Commentator and Rhonda Grattan. Bonnj* Gold was not threatened in the run to the post and won easing up from Rhonda Grattan, who got up to beat Glox-

ania. Glamis Castle was fourth a length away, in front of Perfect Trail. Swithindale broke up at the start and others to leave their feet at various stages were Highland Belle, President, Loriot, Petronella and’Quite Nice, while Cavalier broke up when in third place entering the straight* Bonny Gold looked likely to repeat his earlier success when he led into the straight in the Hadlow Trot from Red Flight, Kildare and Great Wonder, but after a sustained struggle Red Flight got up nearing the post to win comfortably from Great Wonder. Bonny Gold held on for third, a length in front of Blue Signal. , m Signal Officer and Royal Tan were given an exhibition gallop after the second race, and without being ridden out, covered a mile in. 1.43, with the former showing the way to his companion over the last furlong.
