BRITISH SOCIALIST MINISTERS “EVADED” MILITARY SERVICE
LONDON, October 8.
A Conservative ■member of the House of Commons, Earl Winterton, in a speech at Abergele, said he questioned the Socialist Government’s moral authority in supporting the voluntary recruiting drive, because of the astonishing proportion of Government members who, because they were conscientious objectors or for other reasons, had evaded military service in both world wars.
“Mr Herbert Morrison, Mr Ernest Bevin, Mr Aneurin Bevan, Mr NoelBaker, and the Secretary of State for Scotland (Mr Arthur Woodburn) were all conscientious objectors in the 1914 war,” he said. “No wonder they approach the present recruiting drive with tepid enthusiasm.”
