LONDON, October 8.
In Rome, the acting United Nations mediator for Palestine (Dr Ralph Bunche) said thete was a greater possibility of a settlement between the Jews and the Arabs than- for months past. He was most hopeful that agreement would be reached. Dr Bunche is on his way to Paris. In Tel Aviv an Israeli military spokesman said that a heavy battle was raging in the Negeb in south Palestine, where Egyptian forces, supported by tanks and aircraft, had attacked the two Israeli-held heights of Tel Kuneitra and Birbeth Makhaz, south of Gaza. The spokesman said that the heights were first attacked yesterday. They were occupied by Egyptians who were later driven off by Israeli troops. The heights changed hands twice and Israeli forces held them this morning under bombing attacks from Egyptian aeroplanes as well as attacks by tanks and infantry. .
