CYCLING A. BERGAMINI WINS McD OUGALL CUP: CLOSE CONTEST

(By Outrigger) The first of a series of 28-mile road races was conducted last week by the Grey Cash Cycling Club. A fine day was experienced and a large field of riders rode over the coarse from Karoro to the end of Kumara township and return. In a very spirited finish between a large bunch of riders G. Armstrong outsprintecl the rest to gain first place from A. Bergamini, with W. Gardner in third place. Fastest time was gained by H. Sutherland, formerly of Rangiora. 9 , The sprint for second and third places was to decide the winner of the McDougall Cup. and this was won by A. Bergamini by half a wheel. “ Both he and W. Gardner had been equal in points up to this race, j The unfortunate rider was A. King, ljun., who had to retire owing to a’ mishap to his cycle. A win for this j rider would be very popular. D. Clark was noticed finishing very fast. He is a rider who is always in good condition for any distance. Ihomas and M. Bergamini also rode muchimproved races. Jenkins found the pace rather fast on the day. This rider excels over a shorter journey. K. Sutherland dropped out. of the race as his new cycle was not apparently adjusted to his style of riding. B. Reed appeared to pedal well with a faster bunch of riders, and more confidence would win races for him. J. Cooper and B. Walker, having their first race for the season, rode very well and will give the other riders some strong competition before the season ends. It is understood that 14 riders are competing in the Blenheim-Nelson road race next month and should collect some of the major prizes. Next Saturday another 28-mile road race will be conducted. It will start at 2.30 p.m. from the usual place. Handicaps Declared For Tomorrow’s Race The Greymouth Cycling Club will continue its series of road races when it will hold a 28-mile race from Karoro I to Kumara and return tomorrow, commencing at 2.30 p.m. The following I handicaps have been declared:— E Maguigan. If the Empire Games were allotted to Canterbury and the organising committee wished the cycling events to be held in Timaru, there would be no difficulty in obtaining the Caledonian grounds with its cycling track, which, he thought, was the best in Australia and New Zealand, said the Mayor of Timaru (Mr A.
