U.S. Relay Team Defeated By Empire Runners

(Rec. 10.50 a.m.) LONDON, August 12. The British Empire team this afternoon sensationally defeated the American Olympic relay winners— Ewell, Wright, Dillard and Patton. Two Australians, Treloar and Bartram and two Britishers, McCorquodale and Archer, comprised the Empire quartet. The Australians’ brilliant running was mainly responsible for the American’s defeat. McCorquodale had a two yards lead on the Negro sprinter, Ewell, at the first baton change. Bartram then passed the baton to Treloar three yards ahead of the American Wright. Treloar held his own with the I Olympic champion, Dillard, and the Britisher, Archer, took the baton from ' Treloar and won in an exciting finish by three yards. Americans Win Match The Americans outclassed the Empire athletes in the 120 yards hurdles. Australian athletes were mainly responsible for the Empire’s 3| wins—■ the high jump, 400 metres relay and long jump. The United States, with 11| wins, defeated the Empire, 31.
