CARDINAL SPELLMAN TO VISIT N.Z.
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, This Day. The Archbishop of New York, Cardinal Spellman, in a letter to Bishop Liston, of Auckland? has accepted the invitation of the Catholic bishops of New Zealand to visit the Dominion after the Catholic centenary celebrations in Melbourne at the beginning of May. Cardinal Spellman will arrive at Auckland from Sydney on Wednesday, May 12, and spend the following day here, leaving by plane for Wellington on Friday, May 14, and returning to Auckland that afternoon. He will go by air to Sydney and Brisbane on Saturday.
Cardinal Spellman was to have come in 1945 to New Zealand from the Far East to thank the Government and people for their hospitality to American servicemen, but was unable to do so.
The Archbishop of Armagh, and Primate of All Ireland, Dr. John F. d’Alton, hopes to visit Auckland after the Melbourne celebrations, and the Archbishop of Tuam, Ireland, Dr Joseph Walsh, will spend a few days here toward the end of May as the guest of Dr Liston and the other bishops of New Zealand.
