SPORTING Falconbridge Has Not Been Big Money-spinner
The grey Foxbridge gelding Falconbridgc won his third race for the season for owner C. C. Davis and trainer C. B. Dawson, when he led the field home in the Nelson. Cup at Richmond Park on Saturday. The win was not unexpected, for Falconbridge had won at his previous start, over a mile at Hokitika in February, and had done well since. His first win of the season was in the Pukeuri Highweight at Oamaru in January. In all, Falconbridgc has had 16 starts this term for three wins, two seconds, a third, and a fourth, and with judicious placing he should improve on that record before the season closes. ,
Falconbridge started his racing as a two-year-old in the 1943-44 season and in six starts recorded a. win and a second. His first win was in a division of a maiden race at Omoto, after he had run second to Retainer on the first day. The grey had a busy three-year-old season, starting 13 times for only one win, but he also recorded two seconds and three thirds. It was not a highly productive season but he showed promise of developing useful staying form. As a four-year-old, in the 194546 season, Falconbridge again paid his way with a win, two seconds and three thirds, and but for a certain amount of ill-luck his record would have been better. His win was at his last start for the season, in the Mayfield Hack Handicap at Ashburton on a heavy track. Among the beaten horses in that race were Trueway (second), Desert Victory (third), Court Dress, Douglas Haig, Here Hine and Detain.
Three wins, a second and a third were Falcongridge’s share in 16 starts last season. His last win for that season was in the Pukeuri Highweight at Oamaru, a race he won again this season. The Foxbridge gelding has always shown some staying ability and a good deal of speed,
but he, has fallen short of the best class. Around the minor meetings he should continue to pay his way for he carries weight well and is at home on small courses.
Royal Robe Rehandicapped Royal Robe has been rehandicapped to 7.9 in the Waimate Cup, because of his success at Nelson yesterday.—(P.A.) Bonnie Jack Dead
Bonnie Jack, which won her way to good company when trained by the late F. J. Smith for Mr R. Kennedy, died recently. An aged mare, Bonnie Jack was by Jack Potts from Silk Bonny, by Silk Thread from Dark Audubon.
Magical’s Winnings • Magical, the best of the Riccarton two-year-olds, has won £3640 in stakes this 'season, a good return on the 2000gns paid for him at the yearling sales by Mi’ A. Louisson. Magical, who is trained by F. D. Jones, is by Balloch from Black Cat, by Absurd—Moscot, by Martian, . and while he has shown great brilliance as a two-year-old he should be able to run out a mile and even a little more when prepared for it.
