Sports News— Bos Murphy To Meet Mark Hart Tonight

Though Bos Murphy is expected to beat Mark Hart at the Royal Albert Hall on Monday night, he will be meeting a tough opponent and he will not by any means have a walk-over. Murphy regards it as a “training” fight, but at the same time he realises that it will have an important bearing on his prestige in British boxing circles, which cannot at the moment be said to be too high. Should he lose, it will not be. the best advertisement for his meeting with Dick Turpin, a much tougher customer, who is picked to beat Vince Hawkins when they meet in Birmingham, probably on June 28. Murphy, however, is confident that he can win, and he declares that he is much fitter than when he fought Hawkins for the British Empire middleweight title. He is also looking for another fight before meeting Turpin, but Sam Burns, his manager, is apparently having difficulty in making up his mind about an opponent. The logical selection would be Randolph Turpin, who recently beat Mark Hart. If the New Zealander does well against Hart he may meet this younger brother of Dick Turpin.—London, April 2.

Canterbury Women’s Title The Canterbury women’s golf championship was won for the first time by Miss J. Horwell, of Timaru, who played brilliantly to beat Miss Z. Hudson, 5 and 4, in the final at the Christchurch Club’s links at Shirley on Saturday morning.

World Swimming Record Joe Verdeur, the American Olympic swimming candidate, broke his own record for the 200 metres breaststroke in the finals of the Amateur Athletic Union swimming championships at Newhaven, Connecticut. His new time was 2mm 30.3 sec—New York, April 3. Sands to Meet Marr

A boxing match for a £5OO purse has been arranged by the Auckland Boxing Association between Dave Sands, the middle and light-heavy-weight champion of Australia, and Jackie Marr, light-heavyweight champion of Victoria. The match will take place at the Auckland Town Hall on April 19. The association has also arranged a match for April 26 between Marr and the New Zealander, Darcy Hoffman, of Dunedin. Warren Pasley,, the Southland intermediate backstroke swimmer, registered a record time for the 100 yards backstroke event at the annual Otago-Southland contest at Inyercar- «

gill on Saturday night. He swam the distance in 69 3-ssec, 1 I' 5 J! ec better than the record held by A. R. Wilson, of Otago, recorded in 1942. Pasley swam well within himsolf and might have registered a faster time if extended. Southland won, the shield for the first time in seven years, scoring 101 points to Otago’s 91 points. (P.A.) Golf at Akarana The final of the amakeur match play event of the £7OO Victory golf tournament at Akarana on Saturday produced one of the finest matches seen in Auckland golf for some years. L. B. Johnston, of Akarana, beat R. H. Glading, the national, open champion, with a birdie four at the nineteenth after fighting back brilliantly from three down at the ninth hole. Both Glading and Johnston had rounds of 70, Glading going out in 36 and coming back in 34, and Johnston coming back in 21, five under bogey,, after going out in 39. A. Murray won the professional purse of £75 by beating A. J. Shaw, of Miramar, by 3 and 2. Murray was only one up at the ninth hole, but then made a good run in bogey figures and Shaw lost vital holes by misjudging putts.—(P.A.)
