70,000 MIGRANTS FOR AUSTRALIA
CANBERRA, March 15. The official target of 70,000 immigrants into Australia this year appears certain to be reached, according to the Minister of Immigration (Mr A. A. Calwell), who said today that British shipping authorities were increasing the number of ships on the migrant run. Ten vessels are already in this service, and 12 more are expected to enter it before the end of the year. The International' Refugee Organisation is also making extra ships available. ’ Mr Calwell said he expected 30,000 migrants this year from the United Kingdom under the free and assisted passages scheme, 20,000 others (including industrial nominees), who would pay their own fares, and 20.000 from other sources.
