WILD RIBBON AND PATMOS SCORE AT OAMARU RACES

[SPECIAL TO STAR] CHRISTCHURCH, March 14. The Oamaru Cup, principal event on the first day of the Oamaru Jockey Club’s autumn meeting yesterday, was contested by five horses only, but one of the closest tussles produced on the course for some years past was provided, the quintette finishing in a bunch. Siegform was the early leader, but was steadied in behind Wild Ribbon, who had a useful lead entering the straight from Siegform, Sumra, and Authentic, racing almost in line, with Grill about two lengths back. Wiki Ribbon held on more solidly than previously, and lasted to gain a head decision from Sumra, who beat Siegform by half a head with another half-head margin to Authentic, while Grill was only a neck away. There was another outstanding tussle in the Stewards’ Handicap, but the judicial stewards altered the placings following an inquiry into interference in the straight. Patmos went to the front early and led into the straight from Palomino, John Gay and Bath Slipper. Patmos and Palomino were engaged in a hard struggle nearing home, when Bath Slipper put in a claim on the outside of them, and in another spectacular struggle Bath Slipper gained a half-head verdict from Patnw, who beat Palomino by half a head, with a gap of three lengths to John Gav and Special Flight. At a meeting of the judicial stewards immediately after the horses returned into interference caused to both Patmos and Palomino by the winner in the last furlong, it was decided to award first place to Patmos and second to Palomino, and Bath Slipper was relegated to third. Divorced, when holding second piace rounding the home turn, was pulled up because of a breakdown, and was later destroyed.

Never in Doubt

The Trial Stakes was won in an easy manner by the four-year-old filly Faustina, by Salmagundi from Legis, owned by Messrs B. and W. A. Gardiner, of Oamaru. and trained at Washdyke by F. Trilford. She was followed home by Phalenor, also trained by Trilford for Mr H. Elworthy. He is a four-year-old gelding by Phaleron Bay from Elegy. Third place was filled by the three-year-old gelding, Te Tara, by Salmagundi from Receipt, and Play High, by Croupier, headed the remainder. "Bren Gun, a five-year-old gelding by Siegfried from Enwood, trained by his part-owner, T. P. Wilson, at Mosgiel, who also led in Patmos, had a decisive all-the-way win in the Autumn Handicap from Grand Forest. who comfortably beat Early Night and Petty Cash.

Well Related Winner

Speedy, a five-year-old mare by Irish Lancer from Attractive Lady, dam of The Joker, Lord Nuffield and Lady Nuffield, had a comfortable win in the Windsor Hack Handicap, and paid nearly a quarter of a centurv for a win. She -was followed home by the former Riccarton-train-ed Incitatus, who was first into the straight, but could not carry on. Vanity King was a fair third, half a length in front of the first choice, Royal Sal, who was never in a likely position. Flying Control was sent out a pronounced favourite for the Parkside Hack Handicap, but was always in second’ place to the pacemaker and winner, Faites vos Jeux, a four-year-old gelding by Sir Galloway from Rose Ileana, one of the Madder family. Flying Control could not make any impression on the leader at any stage and narrowly missed, being beaten lor second money by Baracha through easing up nearing the post. There was a small attendance at the meeting. The totalisator handled £21,014, against £29.497 on the first day last year, a decrease of £8483.
