MURPHY-SANDS TITLE BOUT IS PROPOSED
A boxing contest for an Empire professional title may be held in Christchurch in May for a New Zealand record purse. The Christchurch Boxing Association is attempting to arrange a contest between Bos Murphy, the present holder of the title, and Dave Sands, holder of the Australian middle-weight and heavyweight titles. Permission would have to be obtained from the New Zealand Boxing Council for so large a purse, and the suspension of Murphy by the council would have to be lifted. If the matching is arranged it will be the first time that so important a title has been at stake in a New Zealand contest. Sands, who is to fight Don Mullet in Wellington on April 10 for the New Zealand heavy-weight championship, arrived in Christchurch on Saturday. The size of the purse is subject to the approval of the New Zealand Boxing Association, but if Murphy still holds the Empire title on his return there is not likely to be any opposition. The purse may approach £ 1000- _______
