SOVIET THREATENS TO BOYCOTT TALKS ON PALESTINE
NEW YORK, March 11. Russia said today that it would boycott the emergency Big Power talks on Palestine if the Arabs and Jews were called in for consultations. Mr Gromkyo made this statement when the United States, Russia, France, and China resumed the emergency talks on the Palestine situation. , . . Mr Gromyko said he already knew the opinions of the Arabs and Jews and he also pointed out that the Big Four were not asked by the Security Council to reopen the consultations. Mr Warren Austin (United States) said he realised this, but it might be possible to get further information from both parties to complete the report which the Big Four must make to the Security Council. Mr Gromyko said that the United States delegation was free to obtain this information, and report to the Big Four, but as a group they had no authority to enter into consultations and he could not take the responsibility for reopening the discussions. No final decision was taken and Sir Alexander Cadogan (Britain) was called in to answer further questions to the mandatory Power.
