Excellency Gallops Fast At Riccarton: Magical’s Good Trial

[SPECIAL TO STAR] CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Excellency and Magical provided the highlights among the limited number of fast workers at Riccarton yesterday morning. Excellency, with J. Dougherty, in the saddle, was taken round to the 10-furlong post on the plough and broke away quietly. She was given more rein approaching the six-furlong post and sprinted home in 1,14 3-5, running her last three furlongs in 3? 2-5« Excellency has done particularly well since she has been quartered at Riccarton and on a firm track- she should be in evidence for the greater part of the Derby distance. Magical was sent out to work quietly over five furlongs on No. 7 grass, as F. D. Jones was frightened he would strike himself on the turning track, but though C. McDonald did his best to steady him he recorded 1.2 3-5, the last three in 37 2-5. Fortunately Magical came through the trial unscathed and he is certain to be at a cramped price for the Welcome Stakes. Musselman’s Trial Musselman sprinted three furlongs on the same track in 36 4-5. Robin Redbreast was also sprinted three furlongs, but his chance of recording fast time disappeared when he veered out and jumped a trestle. He returned 42 3-5. Kartikeya worked well within himself over a mile on the plough, the last seven furlongs in 1.31 3-5, and the final four in 52 2-5. Rahine, which shaped disappointingly in the trial on "Wednesday, was sprinted over six furlongs on the plough in 1.16 1-5, coming home in 51 3-5. She travelled nicely all the way and there does not appear to be anything wrong with her. The Hastings trainer, D. Kemp, has arrived with Sweet Nymph, a consistent but unlucky Neptune filly, which always seems to meet one better. Sweet Nymph looks bright, but she has been confined to light exercise since her arrival. Career Closed Matador’s career closed when he had to be destroyed following his fall in a schooling bout over the hurdles on Tuesday. He was very lame after the trial, and it was later found that he had broken a knee. Matador was a six-year-old gelding by Ringmaster from Midinette, and showed some useful form earlier for his Wellington owner, Mr G. A. Lang, when trained by J. H. Jefferd, but his form then fell away and he was transferred to the Riccarton team of C. G. Humphries. Matador did not succeed in winning while at Riccarton, but went close to it on more than one occasion. Westport T.C. The following officers were elected at the annual meeting of the Westport Trotting Club:—Patron, Mr A. Morley; president, Mr H. Lovell; vice-presidents, Messrs Roche, and O’Neill; treasurer, Mr C. F. Schadick: auditor, Mr J. Radford; stewards, Messrs Schadick, T. Douglas, M. Coyne, J. Hartigan, R. Powell, M. O’Dea, T. Corby, T. Scanlon, J. P. McEnaney, M. B. Scully, and E. Walsh.
