HORNE TWO DOWN IN SEMI-FINAL OF THE AMATEUR TITLE
(P.A.) ; NEW PLYMOUTH, Tins Day. W. G. Horne (Wellington), defending his national amateur title, was two down to W. A.. Edgar (Australia) over the first 18 holes this morning in the 36-hole semi-final at the New Plymouth course. In the other semi-final B. M. silk (Wanganui) was three up on N. H. Amon (Manawatu). Horne and Edgar played sound golf and the match was exciting all the way. , Silk got an early lead on Amon, at one stage being four up, but Amon produced an eagle three at the last hole to cut the lead to three.
The weather was again perfect and the greens were true and on the fast side. Results: —
New Zealand plate, semi-final? — R. H. Glading (Titirangi) defeated J. Holden (New Plymouth), 2 and 1; K. S. Glendinning (Manawatu) defeated J. Jeffery (New Plymouth) 2 and 1.
TIMBER WORKERS’ PAY RISE OF 10s DATES FROM OCTOBER 1
The increase in pay granted to members of the Westland, Nelson and Marlborough Timber Workers’ Union is 10s a week, according to advice received in Greymouth late this afternoon. This extra payment will be made retrospective to October 1, the date on which the general pay increase came into operation.
