MULTILATERAL BASIS FOR WORLD TRADE
(Rec. 12.40 p.m.) CANBERRA, This Day. The early establishment of an international trade organisation was likely as. a result of the recent 17nation trade and tariff agreement, said the Minister of Post-war Reconstruction (Mr Dedman) who left Sydney today to take part in trade talks in Havana. He added that the aims of the international trade organisation would be to re-establish world trade on a multilateral non-discriminatory basis; become the forum for discussion of world trade problems; provide means of resolving trade differences between countries; keep nations working together instead of lapsing into exclusive trading blocs with the smaller powers grouped around and subordinate to their big neighbours; reverse the highly nationalistic ultra-protec-tionist policies of the between-wars era and substitute mutual consultation for economic warfare, which contributed to the acute political tension culminating in the Second World War.
