ATTEMPT TO SPEED UP CARGO REMOVAL FROM N.Z. WHARVES

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Regulations reviving the Cargo Control Emergency Regulations, 1942, and amendment number I will be gazetted this week, stated the Minister of Labour, Mr A. McLagan, this morning. These regulations, which provide for the appointment of cargo control committees at any port or ports in New Zealand to expedite and arrange for the removal of goods from wharf and railway goods sheds, are being reintroduced on a recommendation from the Aid-to-Britain conference.

Under the regulations, cargo control committees have the power to require consignees to remove goods from wharf or railway good sheds at any time during ordinary or overtime hours.

Since the revocation of the regulations in August, 1946, delivery of goods from the wharf and railway goods sheds has been restricted to a five-day 40-hour week and with the loading and discharging of ships being carried on for a span of not less than 59 hours a week, congestion in wharf and railway goods sheds has occurred. The re-introduction, of the regulations and the appointment of committees will assist materially in preventing this congestion and will expedite the ‘despatch, of shipping. The Waterfront Industry Commission will arrange meetings of all interested parties at ports where it is considered that cargo control committees should be established with a view'to recommending to the Minister persons to be appointed to such committees.
