Another Protest
A decision to ask the Minister of Mines (Mr A. McLagan) to allow Messrs D. McCormick (a Government geologist who has been operating in the Buller coalfields for some time) and T. McGhie (manager of the State collieries at Stockton) to make a report to local bodies on the district’s coal resources to combat a recent damaging statement concerning their life, has been made by the Buller County Council. Members took strong exception to the remarks of the Director of the Dominion Laboratory (Mr W. A. Joiner) which were published and broadcast through New Zealand and Australia last week in which he claimed that the bituminous coal resources of New Zealand, suitable for gas making purposes, had been reduced to 14,000,000 tons.
