FASCIST PARTIES SURPRISE AT ITALIAN POLLS

(Rec. 2 p.m.) LONDON, October 14. Nearly 35,000 Italians, representing one vote in 18, voted in favour of Fascism in the municipal elections, says the British United Press Rome correspondent. The vote was especially large when it is considered that the two Neo-Fascist parties for which votes were cast—the Nationalist and Social Movements —had existed only for a few weeks. This support was greater proportionately than Mussolini in 1919 was able to rally s at the polls. The Right Wing Socialist newspaper, Umanita, says: “This is the election’s gravest warning. If these Neo-Fascist parties can get such backing within a month of organisation, they will present a serious threat in next spring’s general election.”

The final results in the Rome municipal elections give the Communist bloc 208,566 votes and the Christian Democrats.- 204,247. This narrow margin means that each group will have 27 seats and a deadlock over the choice of the mayor is expected. The remaining 26 seats will be distributed fairly evenly across the eight minor parties.
