A grant of £ 150 has been made by the Mines Department for a special bin at the Cape Foulwind lime works for the storing of stone dust which is used in the State mines in the Greymouth district.

Miner Injured at Wallsend As d’ result of being caught between two full trucks of coal at the Wallsend mine yesterday afternoon, Alexander McGuinness, a miner, aged 23, single, was admitted to the Grey Hospital last evening suffering from slight injuries to his right hip and back. His condition this morning was reported to be satisfactory.

Aid for Britain . . . „ Arrangements are., in tram for an alteration in the basils of the Aid-for-Britain Committee in Greymouth, stated the Mayor, Mr F. A. Kitchingham, this morning. Anzac Day The executive of the Hokitika R.S.A. voted against a proposal to exchange the name of Anzac Day to National Commemoration Day. It was agreed that Anzac Day should be a day to commemorate all the wars the New Zealanders had fought in (Boer War, World War I, World War II), but members felt that the name should remain unaltered.

Girl's Death in Sheep Dip Falling into a sheep dip on her father’s farm at Kakahi, near Taumariinui, Helen Catherine McDonald, aged two and a half, daughter of Mr W. H. McDonald, lost her life yesterday afternoon. The little girl was playing with a younger child when, the accident occurred, and she was not discovered until a few minutes later. When the doctor arrived she was dead.—(P.A.)

Heavy Bookings That a much larger number than usual will travel away from the West Coast during the Labour Day weekend is indicated by bookings already made for the special train leaving Greymouth early on Saturday morning, October 25. More than nine cars have been completely filled, though bookings have been open for only four days, and a capacity train is likely. Similarly, the special train from Christchurch to the West Coast will carry a large number. French Minister

The French Minister to New Zealand, Mr Armand Gazel, who left the Dominion in July for France, will probably not return until early next year, it was stated today at the French Legation in Wellington. Since his return to Paris Mr Gazel has been requested by his Government to preside over a conference relating to the contemplated financial settlement between Lebanon and Syria. The Legation staff in Wellington will be augmented later by the appointment as vice-consul of Mr Cansou, whose last post has been in Tunisia.—(P.A.) Hospital Bridge

Unable to obtain satisfaction from the Railways Department, which was responsible for the construction of the extension to the bridge to the hospital grounds, the Grey Hospital Board has decided to erect, itself, a railing between the new footway and the part of the bridge reserved for vehicular traffic. The dangerous state of the bridge had been the cause of considerable discussion during the past two months. The board also decided to approach the Grey Electric Power Board with a view to having a light erected at the' hospital end of the bridge. New Club Rooms

By the addition of an extension to the present Soldiers’ Hall, the Hokitika R.S.A. will provide a club-room for members. A gable-roofed building, 48ft by 28ft, the club rooms will contain a billiard room, common room, canteen, reading and writing room and cloak room. When it is possible, club rooms will be built in a second storey over the present hall, while the dance hall will be extended by knocking out the wall of the club rooms. The estimated cost of the proposed club rooms at the back of the hall is approximately £l2OO to £l3OO.

National Savings Investments in National Savings in Westland for the first six months of this year reached a total of £69,715, representing a surplus for the six months of £41,505. Last week’s investments amounted to £2345, this representing a surplus of £1260 or more than double the weekly quota of £1085., Lodgments were made as follows: Reefton, £1030; Greymouth, £646; Hokitika, £320; Blackball, £191; Waiuta, £67; Kumara and Runanga, £36 each; Otira, £ll, and Ross, £B. Gifts to Hospital A number of gifts to the Grey Hospital were acknowledged by the matron, Miss N. P. Moffatt, and the matron of Mcßrearty Annexe, Miss E. Julius, last evening. These included the following:—-Mrs J. Dumbleton (Morris chair for O’Brien ward); Kumara Women’s Institute (feeders for children and traycloths and jug covers); flowers from Miss Craig and others; books from Mr Brayshay, Mrs Joyce, and Mrs Shallcrass; Mrs Mathieson (embroidery of tablecloth); two ex-patients (embroidered traycloths), material for cushion covers, jam dishes, eight vases and flowers and magazines for maternity annexe. The Hospital Board also acknowledged a donation of £ 2 2s to the Christmas Cheer Fund from Kodak Ltd. Mass will be celebrated on next Sunday, October 19, at Te Kinga, 8 a.m. and at Kokiri 10.15 a.m. —Advt.
