MODIFIED SYSTEM OF SPELLING ON WATERFRONT
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The modified system of spelling, as accepted by the Wellington branch, of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union and agreed on by the Wellington Port Committee, will operate from today on the Wellington waterfront. The new system involves a reduction of spelling to restricted hours in the mornings and afternoons for “smoko” purposes. Penalties will be imposed for abuse of the spelling system. Men who absent themselves unduly from any job will be stood down. The system is designed to combat abuses of spelling which unionists report are confined to a minority of their membership.
