BRITISH LABOUR RETAINS SEAT AT BY-ELECTION
LONDON, September 25. The by-election for the West Islington seat in the House of Commons resulted as follows:— A. Evans (Labour), 8760 votes; T. F. Howard. (Conservative), 4084; E. T. Malindine (Liberal), 2459; L. J. Wildman (Independent), 33; Labour majority, 4676. Fifty-one per cent, of the electorate voted. Mr Wildman forfeited his deposit. The vacancy was caused by the elevation of Mr F. Montague to the peerage. At the General Election of 1945, the polling in the West Islington constituency was as iolows: F. Montague (Labour), 11,496 votes; Major E. T. Hope (Conservative), 4090. The number of eligible voters in the constituency was 27,085
