Men like simplicity in feminine dress, writes Mme Elsa Schiaparelli, the French designer, in the A.merican magazine. Here is her code for chic: Don’t wear black if you have a sallow complexion. Don’t be afraid to wear your clothes a long time, but do buy good ones. Don’t be fancy in dress during ’ the daytime. Never go out without a hat because it will kill an otherwise smart outfit. Never wear shoe “flats” with a dress unless it is a very simple sports number.

Don’t buy clothes just because they look good on someone else.

Don’t wear bulky coats, heavy suits, and large hats if you are petite. Avoid excessive decoration and wear inconspicuous clothes if you are stout. Shun hats and shoes that accentuate your height, if you are tall.
