COLLISION DURING SHUNTING ON GREYMOUTH WHARF

Although the damage was slight and there was little interruption to traffic, a railway carriage and a full coal wagon were thrown at rakish angles as the result of a collision during shunting operations on the Greymouth wharf about midday today. The end wagon of a rake of coal wagons fouled the carriage which was being shunted on an adjacent line. The rear wheels of the carriage were lifted almost two feet in the air. while the coal wagon was completely derailed, tilting over at a dangerous angle, in the opposite direction to the carriage.

It was possible to restore the carriage to the rails by the simple expedient of dragging the coal wagon clear of the points, but the wagon itself was not restored to the line until later in the afternon.
