BRITAIN SEEKS MORE ANTARCTIC WHALE MEAT

(Rec. 9.45 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 2. The Government is encouraging the importation of whale meat, said the Food Minister, Mr Strachey, today, and it was hoped to get increasing supplies from the Antarctic. One firm would send refrigerator ships with an expedition this year. It -was an experimental business and very difficult, to do without interfering interfering with the catch of whale oil. Six hundred thousand tons of whale meat were thrown away in the Antarctic annually. If they could get even 10 per cent, out, they would obtain an appreciable contribution to the meat supply. “We can sell every ton of it, which is contrary to my expectations,” said Mr Strachey. :

Referring' to the possibility of increased food imports from New Zealand and Australia, he said: “We already take every ton of their exportable surplus. If Australians would cut down their home consumption and increase their exports, we should certainly take every ton of it.”
