Winter, of the head office of the .Department, of Agriculture, who is visiting Gfeyrhouth,. said .that..beekeeping in New.. Zealand continues to. make steady progress., A pleasing feature on the West Coast was the number of beekeepers-who,, were-.showing a desire to improve their bee ; ,stocks. . The number of established apiaries in New Zealand increased by 1,941 during the past two seasons, and the number of hives registered increased by 24,912 for the same period. Total registrations at June 30, 1947, were: Beekeepers, 7,285; apiaries, 11,386, and hives 154,488. e Conditions generally in most parts of New Zealand were unfavourable for beekeeping during the .spring months of last year. The honey season was four to five weeks later , than, usual, arid production of honey from all sources was esimated to be 3700 tons, some 700 tons below normal.
