503.9 Miles An Hour In Race For Jet Planes
(Rec. 12.15 p.m.) NEW YORK, Sept. 1
Lieutenant-Colonel L. Benjamin Preston flashed around the 22-mile jet course at the national air races seven times today at an average speed of 503.9 miles an hour to win the jet division of the Thompson trophy for the Air Force. The Shooting Star’s speed was nearly 12 miles an hour slower than the winner achieved in ' 1946' on a longer course and without being restricted to a standard operational perform an ce.
