AUSTRALIA SUGGESTS AUTHORITY TO SUPERVISE JAPAN

The British Commonwealth conference on the peace settlement with Japan resumed its discussions today on the supervisory machinery that might be required in Japan after the peace treaty. ■ Dr H. V. Evatt (Australia) considers that the peace treaty should establish an Allied supervisory authority to consolidate the gams already made, ensure observance o. the treaty provisions, and prevent Japan again preparing for war He considers that the authority should have the function of co-ordinating Japanese economy with that of the Pacific and south-east Asiatic reDr Evatt’s view that the authority should contain representatives of all nations now members of •the Far Eastern commission, that u should sit in Japan, that there should be no power of veto connected witn it and that there should be appropriate supervision of Japanese inteinal industry and economic organisation until the United Nations are sure of Japanese competence.
