JOCKEY FOUND IN GUTTER: MURDER CHARGE FOLLOWS
(Rec. 1 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. When a battered body was seen lying in a Darlinghurst gutter late on Saturday night, nobody took much notice, because, as the police were told later, “as a rule little notice is taken of men lying in the gutter because the area is frequented by human derelicts.” It was not .until Sunday morning that the police were called to the scene. They found that the man was lying in a pool of blood and that he had obviously been in. a fight, as there were severe injuries to the neck and bruises on the face. The man died of a fractured skull.
Inquiries disclosed that he was Neil Joseph McKenna, a wellknown jockey and the son of Mr Neil McKenna, secretary of the New South Wales Owners’ and Trainers’ Association. Identification was by clothing only, as his face was almost unrecognisable, even to his father. Early this morning a man was charged with murder.
