OBITUARY Mrs Elizabeth King

The death occurred yesterday at Hokitika of Mrs Elizabeth King, aged 76. Her husband, Mr James King, predeceased her some years ago. Mrs King is survived by one son, James (Hokitika), three daughters, Miss Grace King (Christchurch) and Mesdames J. McEwan and Fraser (Khandallah, Wellington), and a brother, Mr David Stevenson (Hokitika). Mrs Dora Matthews The death occurred at Greymouth yesterday, after a brief illness, of Mrs Dora Matthews, aged 76. She was born at Kamaka, .and lived for the greater part of her life at Greymouth.

Mrs Matthews was predeceased by her husband, Mr Edward Matthews, about 15 months ago. She is survived -by one daughter, Mrs N. A. Wallis (Greymouth), and two sons, Edward (Ngahere) and Robert (Westport); also one brother, Mr Patrick Gillin (Greymouth), and six sisters, Megdames S. E. Campbell, T. Goldsmith, and M. Bain. (Havelock North), W. Dally (Lower Hutt), H. Morgan (Fordell), and T. Coll (Grey mouth). The funeral will take place at the Karoro cemetery, following Requiem Mass at St Patrick’s Church, tomorrow morning. Mr Joseph O’Reilly The death occurred at Greenmeadows (Hawke’s Bay) last night of Mr Joseph O’Reilly. A native of Greymouth, he was for a number of years employed in the postal service here. Later he went to Hawke’s Bay where he was licensee of the Greenmeadows Hotel. He is survived by his wife (formerly Miss S. Green, of Ikamatua), one daughter, Mrs Dawson, and two sons, the Rev. Father Regis O’Reilly (Auckland) and Kevin (Greenmeadows). Sister M. Stanislaus, of the Greymouth Convent, is a sister. Mr John L. Wylde The death occurred last evening at Greymouth of Mr John L. Wylde, aged 79, after a brief illness. He was born at Kaiapoi, a son of the late Mr and Mrs James Wylde, and spent his early years in Kumara. Mr Wylde lived at Runanga for the past 30 years and worked in the Liverpool State coal mine until his retirement some years ago. He is survived by a sister, Mrs G. Grant (Auckland). His brother, Mr Frank Wylde, died a month ago in Christchurch. The interment will take place privately at. the Karoro cemetery tomorrow. Mr A. C. McCay (Rec. 1 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. Mr Adam Cairns McCay, aged 72, one of Australia’s best-known journalists, died in the Carrington Convalescent Hospital, after a long illness. He was known as an editor, poet, literary critic and witty afterdinner speaker. Born in Castlemaine, Victoria, he took an M.A. degree at Melbourne University and started work as a school teacher. He gave this up to join the editorial staff of the Melbourne Argus. Later he came to Sydney ami, edited the Sun, the Sunday Times and the Daily Guardian. He also served as literary editoi' of Smith’s Weekly and associate editor of the Sydney Daily Telegraph before retiring in 1936 to work as a book reviewer and special writer. A column which he wrote in the Sun under the pen name of “Peter Persnurkus,” earned him the title of Australia’s uncrowned poet laureate of the period.

The funeral of Mr William Roberts, of Greymouth, took place.at Karoro cemetery on Saturday. The service at St Patrick’s Church was conducted by the Very Rev. Monsignor Long and the Rev. ' Father Flaherty conducted the service at the graveside.
