REEFTON County Councillors Criticise Inangahua Progress League

(0.C.) REEFTON, This Day. Trenchant criticism of the Inangahua District Progress League was expressed by members of the Inangahua County Council at their monthly meeting following the receipt of two letters from the league, drawing the attention of the council to the condition of Reefton streets and footpaths and the state of sections infested with noxious weeds. The league also requested that attention be given.to the public convenience in Smith street,'Reefton. 1

Cr Topp said that the league should know, if it already did not, that the council had the works asked for in view. The league must be aware of the handicap the county foreman was working under with the shortage of labour. Perhaps the league could tell the council where to get some additional men. Pipes But No Fittings Cr Archer said that the league had criticised the council over the Rosstown water supply extension, but knew well that the shortage of pipes had hampered the work. The county foreman (Mr N. L. Bolitho) said he now had water pipes on hand, but had received no fittings for the pipes. Until these came, it was no use puttinug down the pipes.

Cr Archer said that Progress League members shoud clear thenown sections of noxious weeds, and not attack the council. The Progress League should be asked if it desired to have the provisions of the Noxious Weeds Act brought into force in Reefton. Cr Blackadder said he felt that the town was ill served by constant bickering between bodies. He felt that much more could be accomplished if there could be co-operation between the council and the league. Cr Topp moved that the letters be received—The resolution was carried.

No Action Taken

The Royal Humane Society forwarded an application form regarding an award for an Inangahua Junction resident who had rescued a child from an oncoming train.—As the application time of oyer 12 months had elapsed, no action was taken by the council.' An application is to be made to the Mines Department for a grant to cover rates'for the Burke’s Creek State colliery areas. It was decided that an endeavour be made to engage the services of a suitable man for the planting .of flowerbeds in King George V. Jubilee Park, Reefton. . The Murchison County Council is to be asked to co-operate in the destruction of noxious weeds on Boundary Road. REPORT TO HOSPITAL BOARD Mr A. Topp, at the Inangahua Hospital Board; tendered a report for the visiting committee. There was a» good deal of general cleaning work to be carried out at the hospital, and the services of an outside employee were needed for this, he said. Mr Topp spoke of the good work carried out by Mr F. Archer as driver of the ambulance, but said he felt that the board could not expect Mr Archer to sacrifice his time in the way he was doing. It would be better for the board to employ ’a man who could drive the ambulance, and undertake general work round the hospital as well. A supply of wood ash was needed for the garden and Mr Topp undertook to procure thi.tf It was agreed that the board meet the cost of cartage.
