OBITUARY Mr James Doherty

The death occurred at Runanga yesterday afternoon of Mr James Doherty.' aged 67 years, a well-known resident of the township. He had been ill for a lengthy period. Born at Dunbar, Scotland, Mr Doherty came to New Zealand about 37 years ago. For about 10 years he resided at Ngakawau and Roa, but for the past 27 years had lived at Runanga/ He had been employed at the State coal mines for many years as a check inspector and was injured in a mining accident about 11 years ago. He had been a member of the executive of the State Miners’ Union. Besides his wife, Mr Doherty is survived by two sons, William (Runanga) and James (Greymouth); and two daughters, Mrs Roberts (Wellington) and Miss Patricia Doherty (Wellington). The funeral willl take place at Karoro Cemetery tomorrow morning. Mr K. NewcombeThe death has occurred at Wellington of Mr Kensley Newcombe, aged 56 years. Born at Reefton, Mr Newcombe was well' known in that district, haying worked in a number of quartz mines. He had lived in Wellington for about nine years. In addition to his wife and family, Mr Newcombe is survived by four brothers, Messrs Frank Newcombe (Greymouth), Claude, Vernon and Stanley Newcombe (Reefton), and three sisters, Mesdames V. A. Lee (Riccarton), J. Carter, and E. Riley of (Reef tom.

The funeral of Mr John McElwee was held at the Suburban cemetery yesterday afternoon. Business houses in Reefton closed for part of the afternoon to allow staffs and managements to attend the funeral. The Rev. F. Trim conducted the services. The cortege was lengthy. At the graveside Mr Trim paid a tribute to the respect in which Mr McElwee had been held by the community.
