4000 ARTICLES OF APPAREL FOR EUROPE SENT FROM COAST

As a result of its appeal to the public a few weeks ago, the Greymouth Red Cross Society collected in the vicinitly of 4,00 articles of clothing, most of which will eventually go to children in Europe. The sorting, mending and packing of the clothes has been completed and 22 cases containing 3997 articles have been forwarded from Gremouth to Wellington. These, together with thousands of other cases, from New Zealand, will be transported to the British Red Cross, London, as soon as shipping space becomes available. Helping to build up the Grey district quota were contributions from Reefton, Ikamatua, Blackball, Dobson, Taylorville and Brunner. The committee has in hand the balance of the £56 cash donations received during the appeal for clothes, and as soon as this is expended it is hoped to send another 300 garments to England.

Included in- the consignment from the Greymouth Red Cross are two cases of hospital clothing given to Miss James for her hospital in China, and a case of toys made by the V.A.D. for children in Kavalla, Greece. The Red Cross Society was assisted in the work of sorting and mending the clothes receved in the drive, by a number of women volunteers and the society’s thanks to these workers has been expressed.
