COBDEN BEATS STAR NARROWLY IN FAIRLY EVEN MATCH

Cobden had slightly the better of tis non-competition match with Star on the No. 2 ground at the park, arid deserved its win by .6 points to 3. It was a bright game, both sides opening it up at every opportunity, but the defence was solid and only two tries were scored, the other three points coming from a goal from a penalty. Cobden secured a bigger share of the ball from set scrums and line-outs than in its previous match with Star and with the Cobden backs playing well they were able to call the tune to some extent. On the other hand, Star was by no means outplayed. The Cobden points were scored 'by T. Williams (right winger), who secured a try, and J. Lindbom who kicked a goal from a penalty. N. Hopkins scored a try for Star.

B. Hayton, playing at centre, was the best of the Star backs, showing something of the form which won him representative honours early last season. It was his second good game in succession. Hopkins was the next in line in the Star rearguard. A. McLeod repeated his performance of the previous week and was the pick of the Cobden backs, with K. Horrack, R. Olsen, and G. Henderson all playing well, and J. Lindbom, as usual, a tower of strength at full-back. M. Lambert, J. Pegley and G. Nelson were a strong trio of Star forwards and I. Marley, R. Birchfield, B. Mettrick and A. May the most consistent of the Cobden forwards. R. Thompson, of United, one of the Seddon Shield team, was given a run with the Cobden forwards on Saturday, playing at the back of the scrum, and he showed that he is at the top of his form. The referee was Mr R. Haglund. Kiwi Seniors Win The Westland Championship Kiwi won the Westland SubUnion’s championship on Saturday, defeating Excelsior by 20 points to six. Tries were scored for the winners by R. Stoop (2), M. Stoop, H. Tainui, J. Gamboni and P. Eastgate. Eastgate converted one try. Walker scored a try for Excelsior and also kicked a goal from a penalty. Kokatahi defeated St Mary’s at Kokalahi by 9 points to nil. McCone Is Replaced By Thompson In,Shield Team A. Kirby and R. Godfrey. C. Lewis, who was chosen as an emergency forward is not available.
