Line Of Succession To U.S. Presidency

WASHINGTON, July 10. The United States House of Representatives passed* and sent to the White House today legislation which would make the Speaker, Mr Joseph Martin (Republican, Massachusetts) President if ]VIr Truman should be unable to complete his term of office.

Under this measure the Speaker would follow the Vice-President in line of succession. There has been no Vice-President since Mr Truman became President. The existing law provides that the Secretary of State, who is not an elected official, would succeed to the Presidency if Mr Truman did not complete his term.
