MAY DAY HOLIDAY AT DISTRICT MINES

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Commenting last night on a Greymouth report that coal production in the Grey district had been lost while the miners had the May Day holiday, the Minister of Mines,. Mr McLagan, said that May Day was a holiday agreed upon by the Miners’ Union and mine owners throughout New Zealand. Consequently the miners in observing the holiday were merely carrying out the terms of their agreement with the owners. Mr McLagan added that on a number of. occasions during recent years the miners had been asked to work on May Day, but this year that re»quest had not been made.
