‘AWFUL LOT OF COAL’ IN ANTARCTIC ADMIRAL BYRD SAYS
NEW YORK, April 14. “Within 25 years we could go after the resources in Antarctica,” said Rear-Admiral R. E. Byrd in an interview. “There is an awful lot of coal there, and nobody knows what other resources may lie hidden under the ice.” Admiral Byrd also suggested exploiting the vast icecap as a natural refrigerator for the storage of surplus crops in bumper years. He added that he had not yet. decided whether to recommend official United States action towards establishing part of the Antarctic as American territory.
